The Rising. In the late 1800's the Ghost Dance swept throughout much of the Western United States. Indian people took up the dance in belief that they would reunite with the spirits of the dead and bring peace. Thefive riders, Short Bull , Red Cloud, Sitting Bull , Kicking Bear and Black Elk are wearing their Ghost Dance shirts.
I imagined these Lakotah warriors as they might look heading to a ceremony. Notice they have no weapons and are only carrying sacred sage and sweet grass. Why my interest in the American
Indian? I'm sure it was my adopted grandfather Ray who was half Paiute and taught me about their culture and their respect for the natural world and ourrelationship to it. Or maybe the DNA passed downfrom my great, great grandmother, Mahala, who was a Creek Indian.
