Wolf Robe. Wolf Robe of the Southern Cheyenne people. He was a chief in 1864 when a group of peaceful Cheyenne was massacred by U.S. Military forces at Sand Creek, Colorado. As a result of the massacre the Cheyenne joined the Sioux and defeated Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. In this portrait, he is wearing the Benjamin Harrison Peace Medal for later efforts for peace.
The warriors in these paintings were spiritual leaders of their people. I have portrayed them in the way European Renaissance painters would portray their spiritual leaders with halos around their heads. Since the American Indians believe we are all connected to all living things I used natural skies for halos.
